Watershed Management and environment conservation in the Montane Forest Ecosystem of Matale Foothils (Wiltshire) by Matale District Community Environment Initiative Network
Rationale:Experiences and case studies done in Matale have shown that in each rainy season, Matale, Ukuwela and Raththota urban areas and the surrounding village areas are affected by waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and hepatitis, also many have succumb deaths of waterborne diseases. most of the water resources around are contaminated with various pathogens and the situation is worsening owing to the new sttlements in the Matale Foothills.therefore it has become a must to take immediate measures to conserve and provide pathogen free water supply to the community.
Objectives:To provide cleaner water and establish and environment-friendly sanitation programme for local communities living in the project area.To minimise water borne disease in the selected areas of Matale. Conservation and sustainable use of regional biodiversity.
Activities: watershed area management, degrade habitat enrichment,education and awareness progarmmes, establishment of revolving fund for environment-friendly productions, water supply and sanitation for household use and semi urban areas.
