Rehabilitation of the degraded lands round Sarykol village by means of planting trees and grass. (Elimination the reasons cause land degradation, improvement of the local community livelihood, as a result of activities on restoration of integrity ecosystem on the project territory by means of creation of forest shelter belt, restoration of the soil cover through planting grasses, development of distant-pastures for the cattle)

The population of Sarykol settlement is 8 thousand people. Near to the project territory pastures are located, and cattle is surpassed through the territory. As a result, the vegetation is trodden from year to year; the specific composition of the vegetation is broken. The fauna degrades. Besides, a motorway of republican value passes by the project territory. Intensity of passing is high. Besides, the western part of Sarykol village is a little bit higher than the eastern one, therefore in spring-time the thawed snow flow down to the lake and bog up the territory. After the water dries up, solonetzic layer appears, and it leads to the soils salinization and degradation.

The project is aimed at combat to the wind and water erosion through planting trees and restoration of the soils bio-efficiency by sowing of grass. For this purpose forest shelter belt with maple, poplar will be created to stop wind and water erosion. Sowing of grass will take place to restore the grounds rounds the village, remote pastures for the cattle grazing will be developed to decrease pressure on the territories near the settlement. Explanatory work among local community members will be arranged.
All the measures will improve the ecological situation round the village adn promote active participation of the local community in solution of environmental issues.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

A series of meetings and discussions will be arranged to raise awareness of the local community and local authorities about the environmental problems of the region and the methods they could be solved with.

Notable Community Participation

Just initiative group of people from local community will participate in project implementation. But they will initiate the start of env. movement in village. This initiative is necessary because of lack of any initiatives in the village.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Local community is interested in solution of the environmental problems in the village. People will take active participation in the project realization, giving consultation, help with planting trees and sowing grass, monitoring of the project implementation.

Gender Focus

Main part of initiative group consist from women, but project itself will benefit for everybody in village

Capacity - Building Component

The local population will be more informed about environmental issues. Partnership between NGO and local authorities, farmers and local community will become much stronger. The image of NGOs will strengthen.

Policy Influence

The project initiated policy dialogue between local community members and local authorities in resolving of pasture degradation problems.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The regulation of pasture regime around the village will help to improve livestock conditions and thus to impact on sustainable livelihood of LC members.

Project sustainability

This aspect is facing problems, because the main pastures are locating near highway and from time to time the fires destroying community pastures. But it not depends from LC. From LC site, they agreed between themselves about general rules of pasture rotation and this very simple system will help to decrease overgrazing pressure.

LC developed and implemented general rules of pasture rotation and this very simple system will help to decrease overgrazing pressure.
Also 10 ha of degraded pastures were recovered and more than 1000 trees were planted along the road.
