Underground Biodiversity Conservation Alternatives in Rosia-Remetea area of Padurea Craiului Mountains
The project ?Underground biodiversity conservation alternatives in Rosia-Remetea area of Padurea Craiului Mountains? aims at favourizing a positive impact upon globally protected underground biodiversity in the area of Rosia and Remetea communes (located in Bihor county), by building the capacity of local communities to make sustainable use of their natural resources.
The objectives of the project are to put into practice the 8 principles of an eco-tourist destination promoted by the Association for Ecotourism in Romania, in Rosia-Remetea area and to develop at least 3 instruments for underground biodiversity conservation (education, policies and management) in Rosia-Remetea area, by the local communities.
The project will cover 16 months, in which the Center and its partners will work together with the local communities to raise awareness of locals regarding the natural capital of the area and implement a series of effective measures for biodiversity conservation, with their participation.
The project is integrated in the ?Biodiversity conservation? thematic field of the GEF-SGP strategy and will cover Operational Programs 1,3 and 13.

Policy Influence
- One local Policy was documented in the field of BD through the development of Management Plan for Meziad Cave - Three Decisions of the Local Councils from Rosia, Remetea and Cabesti were issued regarding the selective waste collection
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
By developing ecotourism programs and services in the area, the project will ensure both the sustainable use of the local natural capital and an improvement in local life standards and quality. Ecotourism development in the two communes will be based on the responsible valorization of local natural and cultural resources (caves, forest karst, gorges, wildlife, crafts and traditions etc.) and will require a minimum material investment from the locals. This project will provide the locals with the necessary support to develop the area as a new ecotourism destination in Bihor county.
