SEDZE WETLAND AND WOODLANDS MANAGEMENT FOR BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION PROJECT
The project area is Sedze vilage situated in chitsanza ward 19 of Nyanga district.the goal of the project is sustainable management of biodiversity and water resources in order to improve the livelihoods of households in Sedze village.
project objectives are
-increase wood biomass production t the household and community levels
-improve efficiency in the use of wood biomass energy resources for coking
-improve access to water resources and management of wetlands areas in the foothills of Nyangani mountain range.
project activities
-awareness raising on the use and importance of chingwa stoves and on the need to conserve vegetation cover
-establishing household and project woodlots, and tree nurseries
-planting jatropha as live fencing around gardens and homesteads
- formualting and implementing bylaws on woodland mangement
instituting by laws that protect natural resource springs
- afforestation along stream water courses
-harnessing water through constructing a weir
-constructing water storage tanks
-laying pipes that connect the weirs to the storage tanks
- constructing drinking troughs for cattle livestock.
-watering gardens, woodlots and orchards
project results
-improved access to water for nurseries, woodlots and orchards
-increased capacity to expand tree growing at home as hedges
-earning cash from selling tree seedlings, jatropha seed cuttings, fruits from orchards, poles and firewood from woodlots and sugarcane
-engaging in beekeeping activities
vegetable production for home consumption and for marketing
-introduction of fish farming
-aces to better cooking technology
-self employment
-access to readily available food stuffs and other products
-an improved physical environment
-improved inyangani mountain range ecosystem
-improved grazing scheme
-increased environmental awareness.

-the primary beneficiaries are the project members and their households. the project`s benefits also ripple out to non project members such as the entire households in the village.
