MAMBEMBA WOODLANDS AND WETLANDS MANAGEMENT FOR BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION PROJECT

BACKGROUND

Mambemba village is situated in Chitsanza ward 19 of Nyanga District. the village has a total number o 150 households. Household livelihoods are centered on farming. Development challenges that the community have identified are as follows:
* drought that has contributed to water shortages
* loss of water through seepage in the furrows
*poverty that is being exacerbated by widespread unemployment
*stream bank cultivation
*lack of adequate water supply
*an increase in child headed families.

PROJECT GOAL

*this project is to manage woodlands and water resources in a sustainable manner in order to improve the livelihoods of households in Mambemba village.

OBJECTIVES
*increased wood biomass production at the household and community levels.
*improved efficiency in the use of wood biomass energy resources for cooking
*improved access to water resources and better management of wetlands in the foothills of Nyangani mountain range

PROJECT ACTIVITIES
* afforestation and woodland management
-establishment of 6 hectares of eucalyptus woodlots
- establishment of 30 ha of jatropha
-4 ha of orchards adjacent to the project nurseries.
*improving efficiency in the utilization of wood biomass energy resources
-training 10 women on how to construct and use chingwa stove
-facilitating the construction of 10 demonstration chigwa stoves by the trained women.
*improving access to and management of water resources
-harnessing water by constructing a weir
- constructing four water storage tanks
- constructing drinking four troughs for livestock so that they do ot drink from streams, the weir or natural springs.
-formulating and adopting bylaws on protecting natural springs
-enforcing bylaws and regulations on stream bank cultivation.
-afforestation along water courses

PROJECT RESULTS
*improved access to water for tree nurseries, woodlots and orchards
* increased income from sells of fruits and jatropha seeds
*beekeepings and vegetable production for the benefit of the community
*access to better cooking technology
*reduced soil erosion and gully formation
*improved grazing resources and systems
*increased environmental awareness.

Policy Influence

All those who contravene the local by laws will be fined depending on the degree of the offence.

Approaches are being made to attract other donors to assist in the expansion of the project.

Not yet as the group has been capacitated during project implementation and through training workshops.

Replication of project activities

The project activities can be replicated in other areas below the Nyangani Mountain range and also scale up to medium size GEF project.

The project is sustainable as the group will always seek to achieve self reliance and also development aid where necessary

With plenty of water available, we will maximize opportunities that will be created so as to scale up to medium size GEF project.

Capacity - Building Component

capacity bui;ding will be achieved through various training such as on the importance and construction of chingwa stoves, result based management, and leadership of community projects.

the Mambemba project members are the project owners and implementors. they are at the forefront of every activity being undertaken

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

the harvesting of water and improved management of woosdlands will have positive ripple effcts on the livelihoods in the project village.the befits include increased capacity to introduce income genrating projects on natural resources mangemnt and farming leading to improved food security.

Gender Focus

the project has taken every one on board, the child headed families, the single parent families, Hiv and Aids affected famlies, men and women of all ages.

Policy Impact

this project will have an impact on local policies through the introduction of bylaws that promote sustaianble use of wetlands and woodlands.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

various awareness meetings will be done to ensure that the community is aware of the global environmental issues.

Project Results

The Results

Four small dams and six water reservoirs were successfully constructed by the community to harvest water from the Nyangani Mountain Range. %400 meters of polythene pipes were purchased. the success of all the activities was the inclusion of politics and emphasizing the development aspects of the project. The trainings conducted have greatly contributed to the success of the project in that the knowledge gained is being practiced at household level. the community is now aware of their rights and are now able to influence situations for desired changes.

The two implementing years has opened the minds of the community to the local and global environmental problems. At the global level the community is now aware of what climate change is and the effects it has on their livelihood systems. Because of this awareness each of the four villages has by laws which attempt to minimise environmental degradation. The Chief and Headman assisted by the village committees enforce the by laws.

Four community woodlots and fruit orchards have been established. four weirs and six water reservoirs were constructed for water harvesting.Five wetlands were fenced . a number of gullies are now healing after they were reclaimed. the Chingwa stoves constructed have increased to 24 from the original four demonstartion units.
