Conserving Unique Biological Diversity of Low Mires Through Sustainable Use
Conserving Unique Biological Diversity of Low Mires Through Sustainable Use
Demonstration of the possibility of conserving unique biological diversity of low mires through sustainable agricultural use of mire ecosystems:
? Modernize existing machinery of local collective farm to enable mowing on wet grounds
? Carry out vegetation mowing on 1200 ha of mire, take out and process harvested biomass for further agricultural use as hay and silage. Ensure that the mire is mown during at least 4 subsequent years.
? Conduct annual monitoring of vegetation and birds communities with focus on globally threatened Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola on mowed areas
? Estimate economical effectiveness and ecological effect of mowing. Develop and disseminate recommendations on sustainable use of low mires (fens). Lobby for introduction of positive experience at other wetlands of Belarus
