Protection of domestic sheep breed Pramenka

The project aims to help preserve native sheep species, variety ?Pramenka? (the most autochthonous sheep variety in the Balkan) by establishing Center for reproduction and by initiating organic dairy production as an important income source. The following project activities were organized:
Creating ?parent? herd of authentic sheep breed Pramenka,
Adaptation/ reconstruction of facilities (for summer and winter condition) to keep the herd,
Introducing standards for organic dairy production (cheese, milk) and initiating conversion to the organic dairy product,
Planting of eroded land with plants and grass for future grazing.
Creation of marketing strategy and action plans to promote sheep breed Pramenka and its products in order to increase the market value of the breed products.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Formed Pramenka breed herd from 229 lambs and 6 sheep, Strengthen the livelihood of local inhabitants by boosting production of organic products as an important source of income and at the same time prevent emigration of people from these depraved areas.

Policy Impact

Improved biodiversity protection and conservation through encouraging local population to protect and reproduce local autochthonic animal breed. Increased number of Pramenka Ovchepola sheep will influence installation of national program subsidy program.

Notable Community Participation

Organized two workshops with 60 participants including local sheep breeders, during which interested participants received theoretical and practical training in sheep breeding, organic dairy production, basic principles of the HASSAP system in handling, manufacturing and distribution of the finished dairy products, Closing Manifestation ?Days of Macedonian sheep? (with intention to become annual event) with 200 participants from the local population, representatives from the local municipality and national government, experts, local and national media, was organised and the project results were presented.

Capacity - Building Component

Organized two workshops with participation of local sheep breeders, during which interested participants received theoretical and practical training in sheep breeding, organic dairy production, basic principles of the HACCAP system in handling, manufacturing and distribution of the finished dairy products,

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Raise public awareness on importance of conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity important to agriculture, Leaflet with basic information on Pramenka sheep bread was prepared, printed and distributed, Closing Manifestation ?Days of Macedonian sheep? (with intention to become annual event) with participants from the local population, representatives from the local municipality and national government, experts, local and national media, was organised and the project results were presented. The event was recorded and presented on the Macedonian National TV. Leaflet promoting the Pramenka sheep national day produced and distrubuted. The project and project results was recorded and presented on the Macedonian National TV (series smart Projects, 20/05/2009).

Project sustainability

The NGOs is advancing with implementation of ongoing and further developing new complementary activities: - Finalising the registration for reproduction centre for Pramenka sheep breed, - Completing the certification procedure for organic dairy production, - Growing the Pramenka sheep herd with new Pramenka lambs. - Further completion of the facilitates for keeping the herd and purchasing equipments for dairy production (different types of cheese, milk production). - Received financial support from Government of Macedonia for rural development ?Organic village?.
