Old trees and wood in forest ecosystems of Poland
Project ?Old trees and wood in forest ecosystems of Poland? is a continuation and development of OTOP?s project ?Assessment of biological value of forests? project from 2005, which goals are: identification of natural valuable forests and lobbing for their proper protection and use.
The main goals of project co financed by GEF are:
1.Evaluation of forest biodiversity in Poland and strengthening monitoring system of nature;
2.Activization of volunteers helping in monitoring of environment;
3.Training of local community members (employees of National Parks and other parties) about the role of dead wood in forests (informing about project results, lobbing for increase in dead wood quantity to be left in forests).
To achieve the goals, the following activities have to be taken:
1.Inventory - making of condition of biocenatically valuable trees and dead wood in Polish forests (120 test areas, every area size will be 1 x 1 km); all inventory ? making activities will be taken by volunteers, mainly students of biology and forestry;
2.Assistance for volunteers helping in monitoring of forests (purchase of equipment, assistance of project coordinator, reimbursement of travel expenses);
3.Promotion of project results (publication of report, CD production ?Refuges of forest biodiversity?, website);
4.Around 10 meetings of project coordinator with indirect project beneficiaries (administration employees of Nationals Forests and National Parks).

Notable Community Participation
Volunteers will be direct project beneficiaries. Thanks to involvement in project activities, their awareness about natural environment condition will be raised. Thanks to publications, also awareness of indirect project beneficiaries (employees of National Forests and National Parks) will be raised. They will help in test areas designation, collection of data and exchange of information. Other project beneficiaries will be: representatives of local community, Nature Conservators and local centers of natural education.
