The coastal villages along the Aceh Jaya shoreline were affected severely by the Tsunami and earthquakes. The South-South Grant Facility supports various socio-economic initiatives executed by 3 community groups in Calang. The main aim is to promote community based socio-economic and sustainable livelihoods recovery. Supported recovery activities include building small scale automotive repair workshops (Paya Semantok Community) and working capital package to run the workshop. SSGF fund also helps develop and run integrated community economic activities such as the development of permanent floating fish nets equipped with lights; development of one fishing boat for deep sea fishing; start up package and working capital for fish salting cottage industry. To meet educational purposes, the grant will also be utilized to purchase five multimedia computers for Rumoh Baca (community-based Library center) at Kampong Blang village.

The rapid changes and limitations in Aceh rehabilitation and reconstruction has required all parties involved in reconstruction to adjust their efforts to address the challenges. Yayasan Rakata Alam Terbuka as the partner of SSGF grant has been revising its work plan and strategy for community assistance while waiting to receive SSGF grants. Disagreement among communities and the seasonal changes especially the fishing season has led the project to change plans and approaches.

The SSGF grant award of $30,000 was initially designated to assist three communities. However, after meetings with the community attended by SSGF programme officer, National Coordinator and the Global Greengrants Foundation board, Yayasan Rakata Alam Terbuka decided to concentrate its community work in two villages, Kampong Blang and Kuala Do. SSGF support will be used to furnish the community library Kampong Blang and a series of economy activities in Kuala Do, such as farming and agricultural-based microfinancing.

The Kuala Do community requested a woodcraft workshop to be built as an alternative income generating activity in addition to fish salting cottage industry. The profit of the workshop would be given to the orphanage and also to build alternative education building for children. Yayasan Rakata Alam Terbuka receives funding assistance from the Samdhana-Global Greengrants Foundation to cover its operational and administration costs to help it serve survivors in Calang.
