The project aims the promotion of renewable energy for rural development through building of demonstrative solar fridges for the artisanal fishermen in Machanga fishing camps, contributing simultaneously to mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity, and support livelihoods of this fishing community.

The fishermen in Machanga are facing decreased income which is low and gets lower and lower, despite increased production. Most of the fish get rotted and/or lose quality due to inadequate conservation and low quality processing resulting in low fish market value. Added to this scenario we see an increased environmental degradation due to an increased pressure on natural resources.

The project will contribute to increase the income generation of these poor artisanal fishermen community, as their catches will have a higher commercial value, on warehouse fridges. In addition, the increased household income will result in the reduction of pressure on the natural resources, contributing to ecosystem and habitat conservation and maintenance of biodiversity in this region. It is further hoped that this project, if successfully executed, will be replicated in other artisanal fishing camps along the coast, as good practices.
