Kaketa River Rehabilitation Project
The project is one out of ten projects in the Kilome Division Land Degradation Cluster in Makueni district in the Eastern Province of Kenya. The Kilome division land degradation cluster projects lie within about 40 square kilometres. All ten projects aim at reducing / preventing land degradation by focusing on the rehabilitation of gullies, water tanks for domestic and agricultural use, establishment of terraces and intercropping methods and reafforestation of catchment areas. The ten CBOs implementing the respective projects are supervised and coordinated by Kenya Initiatives for Development (KID) which has the role of a lead NGO.
This project plans to carry out the following activities:
? Purchase working tools of high quality- Oct. 1st-10th 2006.
? Desilt Kwa Mbisi check dam 100m upstream (0.5m deep, 30m wide) - 0ct. 13th -30th 2006.
? Dig two cut off trenches (1.5m x 1mx 1km long) along Kwa Mbisi check dam in November 2006.
? Fence Kwa Mbisi water source (300m upstream) in December 2006.
? Construct a cattle trough at Kwa Mbisi in January 2007.
? Desilt Kaketa check dam 100m upstream (0.5m deep, 30m wide) - March 1st -20th 2007.
? Dig clean water reservoir (35m long x 20m wide x 6m high) - March 23rd - Apr. 20th 2007.
? Construct manholes (inlet, outlet, inspection chamber) - Apr. 21st -30th 2007.
? Construct a masonry 20,000 litres tank (3m diameter, 3m height) in May 2007.
? Fence Kaketa check dam water course (300m upstream) - June 1st -20th 2007
? Dig two cut off trenches (1.5m x 1m x 1km long) along Kaketa check dam ? June 21st ?July 30th 2007 (CBO contribution).
