Building community awareness of the effects of climate change, developing adaptive strategies through sustainable resource management and renewable energy installation
The Community of Clozier (including Belvidere) is located in the Parish of St. John. Agriculture is the main economic activity within the community, but there has not been adequate sensitization for the farmers and the community in general of the deleterious effects of Climate change, even though they are being affected by those changes. This project will aim at reducing the information gap re Climate Change within the Community through a series of awareness programmes and also the introduction of a renewable energy lighting plant at the community playing field. The wetland in the Climate Smart zone will be restored to RAMSAR standards and developed into an eco-tourism project.
The total cost of the project is XCD$144,603.00.00 (US$53,556.67) which will be funded by:
GEF: XCD$125,200 (US$46,370.37)
GRANTEE: XCD$7,277.00.00 (US$2,695.19) In Kind
XCD$3,000.00 (US $1111.11) Cash
OTHER: XCD$3726.00 (US$1,380.00) In Kind ? Gov?t of Grenada
XCD$5,400.00 (US$2,000.00) in kind - Renewable Energy Consultant
The project will benefit the entire community of Clozier/Belvidere through the education/awareness programme, added income from employment on the eco-tourism project, and additional usage of the playing field for nighttime activities.
The benefits/lessons of the projects will be shared with the Clozier community as well as other communities through the dissemination of reports, brochures and other forms of documentation. At the end of the project, a knowledge fair will also be held to demonstrate what had been learned.
The project will be monitored by a specially appointed team and the final evaluation will be carried out by a consultant hired for that purpose.
Goal:
To increase community education/awareness on climate change and develop the community ? managed lands in the Belvidere area as a model Climate Smart Zone, with sustainable income generating activities.
Objectives:
(i) Within 12 months, increase the awareness of at least 75% of the population, aged 7 and above, of the nature and effects of climate change.
(ii)
Within10 months of the start of the project provide renewable energy, through solar electricity for the entire zone and renewable energy technologies
(iii) Within 12 months Develop sustainable management/protection strategy for Wetlands, ?island? and water source spring; and develop eco-tourism project
