Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation Programme (COMPACT) is an innovative model for engaging communities in conservation and shared governance of World Heritage sites and other protected areas. Founded in 2000 by the GEF Small Grants Programme, the United Nations Foundation with the involvement of UNESCO, the Programme has worked with World Heritage Sites in nine countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Based on the experience gathered and an innovative model that has been refined over more than ten years, UNESCO in collaboration with the GEF SGP is supporting replication of COMPACT in new sites and the Maloti Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site (MDPWHS) is one of them. The MDPWHS is a transboundary site jointly managed by Lesotho and South Africa. The process for development of the COMPACT Site Strategy for Sehlabathebe National Park was funded by UNESCO through the Netherlands Funds- In-Trust (NFiT) Cooperation with co-financing from UNDP – Lesotho, GEF Small Grants Programme Country Programme in Lesotho in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture and Sehlabathebe National Park (SNP). A parallel process took place in South Africa for the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, the South African component of the Maloti Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site, thereby necessitating cross-fertilization between the two processes that informed formulation of a COMPACT Strategy for the Maloti Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site.
