The harmful effects of climate change, land grabbing by agro-industries and the rise of mining in the Cameroon estuary area are encouraging the local population to converge on low-altitude lands to cut down the forest and set up agricultural operations with poor cultivation practices that degrade the soil. Land degradation is an increasing worldwide problem with negative consequences on agricultural production, environment and food security. The long period of land exploitation with poor cultivation practices, such as extensive slash-and-burn agriculture, monoculture, poor crop rotations, etc., has led to a decline in soil fertility and consequently a reduction in crop yields. This significant anthropogenic pressure on the forest ecosystem and on the climate requires a synergy of action with a view to reducing the related negative impacts, while improving the income of target populations through the promotion and adoption of good agricultural practices, and good practices for sustainable land and water management. This compendium is part of a project to promote good market gardening production practices to fight against the degradation of arable land in the municipalities of Lokoundjé and Kribi 1 within the GEF/SGP lanscape.
