At EXPO Shanghai 2010, the Prize will award a not-for-profit project by a citizen or a group that contributes to the global effort to ameliorate the quality of life in cities, or which demonstrates a strong potential to do so.
The BIE-Cosmos Prize refers to a series of prizes, born of a collaborative initiative between the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) and the Expo '90 Foundation of Japan, to encourage the participation of citizens at Expos.
The two SGP projects that have been selected as nominees for the BIE-Cosmos Prize, EXPO Shanghai 2010 for Better City, Better Life are:
BOTSWANA - Urban Agriculture For Community Empowerment Project (UCEP) (BOT/OP3/2/06/18)
CUBA - Reduced emissions of Dioxin and Furan by the Elimination of Uncontrolled Burning of Municipal Solid Waste in the Community of Isleta, Cuba. This project won the CNN Hero Award in 2008.(CUB/OP3/1/05/004)
The Prize is awarded at five Expos in ten years, the first having been awarded at EXPO Zaragoza 2008 and each rewarding a citizen's project pertaining to the theme of the Expo at which it is awarded.
Each Prize consists of a monetary award of 20,000 Euros, funded exclusively b ythe Expo '90 Foundation.
