The project aims at raising awareness and building consensus on strategies to be adopted in sustainable utilisation of the palm tree (Hyphaene petersiana) and associated veld products used in basket production through a workshop. The workshop will bring together basket weavers from various parts of Ngamiland for dialogue and the eventual formation of a legal entity that will be a mouth piece and lobby organisation for basket weavers. In addition, it will give the weavers a chance to prioritise on the projects to be undertaken to further enhance basket weaving and ensure appropriate harvesting strategies are adopted to sustain the palm trees as a way to safeguard sustainability of basket weaving industry in Botswana. Basket weaving is very important as it is an activity undertaken by women and it brings the much needed cash income to households playing a critical role in poverty alleviation while ensuring sound environmental management.
