Strategies for Sustainable Land Management Through Sustainable Utilisation of Natural Resources
The project aims at raising awareness and appreciation of natural resources conservation by the Changate community with the view to instill ownership so as to police and protect the natural respources in the area. Of particular interest will be the ability to motivate the community to have the same commitment to conserve indigenous plants and stoppage of soil mining as they with the drift fence, dam and borehole where they have shown good governance and husbandry practises. The ability to impose and adhere to sanctions with regard to harvesting of veld products is paramount for their existence and sustainability. The possibility of generating income through sustainable use of veld products will be explored to instil a sense of ownership of the natural resources as a way of contributing towards improvement of livelihoods. Through a series of kgotla meetings and a workshop the community will discuss the best options for addressing the issues of indiscriminate harvesting of veld products and soil mining with a view of coming strategies to curb any further degradation. In addition, the activities will be geared towards building on the existing coping strategies of good husbandry portrayed in cattle farming. The planned activities will make sure that all the stakeholders are involved in finding solutions that will be used to curb land degradation and loss of biodiversity. Furthermore, the dialogue will lead to the formation of a legal entity and development of a proposal that will enable the community to implement a full project.
