Environmentally Friendly Methods of Pest Control In the Pandamatenga Farms
Environmentally Friendly Methods of Pest Control In the Pandamatenga Farms
The project aims at finding environmentally friendly methods of controlling termites. Termites are some of the most damaging pets in the tropics and can cause considarable problems in Agriculture, forestry and housing. To tackle the termite problems, there is a need to do a basic identification of the termite species or family and that of indigenous plant species avoided by termites. Lack of toxomic understanding of termites has been a major impediment to the study and management of tropical termates. Finally when alternative termites control methods based on indigenous knowledge systems are identified, the project will promote the use of environmentally friendly controls and demostrate their economical viability. In addition, BOTHASTED in collaboration with the Pandamatenga Commercial Farmers Association will work on the design of silos for storage and evaluate the life of the chemicals after being used for pest control in the closed environment.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
By virtue of working together with the farmers there will be a platform for information exchange that will be enriching. The project also has proposed that there should be close colaboration with trainers and farmers involved at the Institute of Insect Physiology and Entomology (ICIPE) in Kenya. This is viewed as the best way to build capacity for the farmers.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Generally, the use of chemicals is expensive. This is partly because they have to be imported into Botswana and also normally require special care in use and storage. Use of IKS based solutions might mean that the expenses associated with the chemicals will be reduced and in fact, naturally growing plants are almost freely available. This project will therefore contribute to achieving good financial returns.
