REDUCING POVERTY AND DEFORESTATION THROUGH FOOD SECURITY AND AGRO FORESTRY IN WOMEN SELF HELP GROUPS
1. About the NGO
Kachere Development Program (KDP) is a social development arm of the Anglican Diocese of Eastern Zambia. It is an autonomous faith based organization operating under the Certificate of exemption from registration of the Zambia Anglican Council number ORS102/75/52 in the Office of the Registrar of Societies.
Kachere is an organization whose mission is brings about tremendous and long term transformation in some of the local communities impoverished by under development and poverty.
Kachere uses a community based approach in implementing its programs. This entails that the local communities own the project thereby enhancing community ownership and long term sustainability. The organization will use workshops and seminars and the use of field tree nursery demonstrations. It will also provide subsidies in form of seed varieties to the best practicing individuals and groups. The project will also engage local leaderships in the implementing of this work so that after the funding, the locally trained volunteers carry on with this work.
Kachere has a long history of implementing donor driven and funded projects since 2008 when it was known as the Children Project. Over the years the project has grown to a higher hence its transformation to become a regional FBO. This transition has given KDP an opportunity to roll out its programs to the whole of Eastern Province of Zambia. Kachere has well experienced team of staff in the program who are highly competent of working with rural and vulnerable communities.
Their structure has the Board of Trustees (6 member team) which is the policy making body. This board is assisted by the Project Implementation Management Team (PIMT) which runs the day to day functions of the organization. The organization?s structure is submitted as an attachment. However, Kachere has 6 full time staff, 4 community facilitators and many community volunteers who are engaged in the integrated health and development projects at site levels.
Kachere as a diocesan FBO is affiliated to the Zambia Anglican Council and also a member of the Eastern Province CSOs. It is a member of the Consortium of SHG Implementing Network.

2. Project?s main objective
2.1 To improve the nutritional status of the most vulnerable households in Chipata district.
3. Specific Objectives
3.1 To improve the capacity of 640 households of Chipungo, Mphanga and Mnukwa Project sites by August 2014
3.2 To increase food production and crop diversification of 40 women groups of our three project sites by June 2014
3.3 To promote best practices in environment and natural resource management at household and community level in Chipungo, Mphanga and Mnukwa by August 2014
3.4 To increase knowledge in environment and climate change of 30 villages, 4 schools in the project sites and more than 900,000 people of the Eastern Province and beyond by June 2014
4. Key project outcomes
4.1 640 women trained in crop diversification and agroforestry programs
4.2 6,400 tree nurseries developed
4.3 10 fish ponds developed and 1,500 fingerlings
4.4 Increase in nitrogen fixing trees (Sesbania sesban, cow peas, soya beans, groundnuts etc.)
4.5 10 demonstration plots for trees found and utilized.
4.6 2 demonstration plots for rice cultivation found and developed
