MUNGULE FORESTRY BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION PROJECT
MUNGULE FORESTRY BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION PROJECT
ABOUT NGO

Mungule Women Farmers Group ? Community Based Organization (CBO). The project is located 10km north of Lusaka and 10km off the great north road towards the west, covering Mungule and surrounding villages. This is a rural area characterized by massive deforestation resulting from charcoal burning, excessive cutting in illegal coupes and conversion of forestland to agriculture. These, in turn are driven by population growth and basic needs of people. Late burning coupled with over-exploitation of forests in this area has caused changes in the light conditions and accelerated grass growth, which in turn has provided fuel for late fires thereby adversely affecting the Ecosystem. Mungule is a low income rural area whose residents live in abject poverty and mainly survives through charcoal burning / selling and vegetable gardening.

The relevance of the project to the GEF/SGP country programme strategy is to enhance community capacity for biodiversity conservation through the promotion and wider coordination of biodiversity education and public awareness programme of the GEF/SGP for biodiversity information, communication
