Aquifer Recharge Approaches to Improve Water Availability for Agriculture in Sierra Leone
This proposal outlines a program for evaluating options to boost the supply of water for crops and livestock during the Sierra Leonean dry season. Two established aquifer recharge approaches, infiltration wells or basins and sand dams, will be considered for a pilot agricultural region Sierra Leone. There are increasing challenges to crop production and livestock management in West Africa, resulting from erratic rainfall and extended dry periods. Precipitation from peak rain periods is not accessible during the dry season because it runs off or evaporates.
The project has two components: an academic research and a community development initiative. It exemplifies the importance of putting research into use at the local level.
The study will include a technical, natural sciences approach focused on suitability of soil and hydrology for aquifer recharge in candidate areas. It will be coupled with a social science investigation into the cultural perceptions that may affect adoption of these new technologies, which is critical to the successful execution of a project. Senior level students will make up the core of the research group, two female and two male, at least a technical scientist and a social scientist, for a total of four. This experience will endow the researchers with first-hand knowledge while the partnership with the university will increase overall institutional capacity.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Active participation of community members through their representatives (local chiefs, house¬hold heads, and the local government) will be sought throughout the study. Information will be gathered and disseminated through meetings, informal discussions, and personal interviews. The results of stakeholder engagement will set the platform for the formation of two local level stakeholder groups for management of artificial aquifers to enhance dry season supply of safe and abundant water. The pilot sites will be managed by these groups through charging minimal amounts for the services provided.
Capacity - Building Component
Families, farmers, and community leaders will be engaged in dialogue on the value of water systems for dry-season agricultural use. Discussion items include: ? Pilot system to produce water in usable quantities, as a potential next step; ? Palatability of stored water to livestock and suitability for crop irrigation; ? Ownership and payment options for the system - how should the water be allocated or distributed; and ? Financial value of the water and opportunistic benefits as a result of the system. The work will serve to partially fulfill the training objectives for the senior level students. Additionally, the research outcome will be useful for local farmers in Sierra Leone.
