Sustainable Waste Management Initiative – Environmental Protection that Benefits the Poor
The project is aimed at starting up a decentralised solid waste management (SWM) scheme in Bo District, Southern Province, Sierra Leone. Compost generated from the waste will be used to promote organic agriculture and also discarded biomass will be used to establish energy-efficient fuel briquette making enterprise. The project will have a two-sided effect: it will improve the local environment, and also offer continuous employment to individuals from socially and economically disadvantaged groups. The primary objective this project is to reduce environmental degradation caused by solid waste through Sustainable Waste Management (SWM) which strives for a maximum waste recovery by composting, recycling, and reuse, and aims at zero waste to be disposed onto dump-yards and landfills.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Community participation in SWM is the key to a sustainable and integrated project. The aim is to get as many local actors as possible to participate and actively contribute to the project. Most importantly, we want to create a feeling of ownership for the project among the citizens, whose waste is managed and whose local environment is improved by the project.
It is vital that the public ? i.e. ordinary citizens as well as private and public institutions ?whose waste is managed and whose environment is improved, is actively involved in the project. An important step to motivate and engage the public is via continuous public awareness campaigns based on an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) strategy. In addition, a special feeling of ownership vis-à-vis the project will be created at household level.
One thousand households will take part, totalling in around 5,000 people.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project aims at empowering rural communities to build sustainable livelihood in food production while protecting the environment. By ensuring their own food security and contributing to local food production, they will lessen their dependency on fluctuating food prices. Therefore vulnerable families and their children, as well as the youth within these communities, are targeted to work on this project to sustain their own future.
The following activities will be undertaken as part of this component of the project:
? Organic farming practices through demonstration plots and training programs
? Seed-banks to cover over 100 households through the Self Help Groups (SHGs)
? Viable and practical income generation projects like vegetable cultivation and vending, and food-processing for subsistence farmers.
