Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
A participatory monitoring process will be promoted to enhance information gathering for knowledge management. Simple monitoring forms will be explained to the appropriate spectrum of community people for active involvement, participation and ownership and to update information of the project. The project information will be stored, managed and maintained as per the provided guidelines. Project information will be kept in soft and hard copies so that all documents can be accessed by interested parties. Local leaders and land owners will be empowered through Citizen Voice and Action (CVA) trainings to advocate for better environmental health and information from Government. Stakeholders will be equipped with skills and knowledge in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Reports for sharing with partners will be documented in a simple and easy to read fliers and brochures. The integrated development team will be responsible for compiling monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual programme reports with consultation and advice from the GEF SGP SIERRA LEONE. These reports will be stored in both soft and hard copies at the programme. The monthly reports will be for consumption of sub branch and branch, while the semi annual and annual reports would be submitted to the donor office. The project will facilitate constant community and partners? reflection meetings to enhance information sharing with an aim of improving learning as a process. The project leadership team will be attending the District forums and will join the district/county steering group membership to strengthen integration with partners and other important players in the district/county to increase synergy. The district/county forums provide important avenues to articulate the lessons learned and challenges encountered.
Gender Focus
During community engagement meetings, it was revealed that the highest percentage of people affected by environmental threats and risks, are women and children below the age of five years. On the other hand, women bear the burden of taking care of children in case of environmental health hazards/illnesses compared to their counterparts the husbands. Should parents fall sick in the home, it?s often the girl child to care of their mothers and fathers while the boys are left to go to school or farm. According to information generated from community conversations/ engagements, women and children are mostly than men and boys. On average, women bear the burden of fetching firewood, water and natural resources. In cases of decisions over access and ownership of limited natural resource, women and children suffer the most. During the design of the project, care was taken to ensure that both sexes are targeted across all interventions through household?s level sensitization on environmental protection. The project was also designed with due consideration on the respective gender roles and responsibilities in enhancing household and community health. Sensitizations will focus on the responsibilities of both men and women in responding to actions that prevent environmental degradation. These will focus on promoting models (eco-stove) that enhance environmental health among pregnant mothers, lactating mothers and children.
