Improved Charcoal Production System (ICPS) for Climate Change Mitigation
Improved Charcoal Production System (ICPS) for Climate Change Mitigation
Clean Energy Solutions is a small renewable energy business registered and operating in Sierra Leone. Since its inception Clean Energy Solutions has been looking for and experimenting with novel ways of taking renewable energy to grassroots people. We are also researching into appropriate technologies that can be passed on to communities in the area of climate change mitigation. This project aims to transfer appropriate technology to charcoal producers in the western area rural communities (starting at Waterloo) and later extended to other charcoal producing communities around the Country. The project also aims to reduce the amount of trees felled during charcoal production, reduce the amount of harmful volatiles like methane released into the atmosphere, increase the yield of the charcoal producers whilst using a reduced quantity of wood, better organize the charcoal producers to become self-reliant and getting them to understand and use the technology well.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
After this first project the implementation team should be in a position to construct one retort in about two-three weeks thus making it possible to easily do the project in every district in Sierra Leone. The scale up of the project must be accompanied by the cultivation & development of a sustainable forest in every district starting from the Western area rural district. This sustainable forest will be used exclusively for domestic fuel production (Charcoal) and will be operated on a fall one plant two basis. It will considerably ease the pressure on the natural forests and allow for the ecosystem to be preserved. Acacia milenta is recommended for its fast growth and high calorific value. The moringa tree can also be included because it grows very fast and its leaves are of immense medicinal and economic value.
Gender Focus
In the current spectrum of things women are not that involved in charcoal production because it is mostly done in the forests and that environment is usually too risky for them. They are mostly involved in the retail side of the business. However with this project women can become actively involved in the production of charcoal because it is now being done in a very secure and organized environment. It is an opportunity for women to compete because the playing field is now level. Women?s groups or associations are now in a position to organize themselves and do their charcoal business themselves instead of depending on men who take their money without delivering the products. There are over (200) two hundred women involved in the charcoal retailing business around the target communities who have the desire to produce their own products but are constrained by the status quo. This project will afford them the opportunity to source their own raw materials using the tricycles provided by the project, haul these materials to the production site and produce their own charcoal under very favorable conditions.
