Managing medical (healthcare) waste from Peripheral Health Units (PHU) in Bo and Pujehun Districts.
Bo District where this project will be implemented has 104 Peripheral Health Units (PHU?S). With this number, only seven (7) can boast of environmentally safer facilities for the disposal of their medical waste. The remaining 97 PHUs in the District use various forms of hazardous practices like shallow burial and open burning for disposing of their medical waste. These practices are apparently ineffective and risky particularly for the disposal of such non-organic items like sharps (blades, syringe needles etc) and pathological waste. The goal of this intervention is that (50) Public Health Unit (PHU) and its host communities in the Bo district live environmentally safe and secured lives. FID/SL shall alongside the construction of five hand pump water wells, train 100 medical staff on themanagement of healthcare waste, train 100 blue flag volunteers and construct 50 Medical waste disposal points within 12 months.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Foundation for Integrated Development (FID/SL) in collaboration with the District Health Management Team of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation Bo, the Bo district Council (BDC) undertook a joint assessment tour involving host communities in the Bo district following persistent reports of cholera outbreak in the Country (UNICEF report August 2012).
