Eco-friendly black soap making for sustainable land and forest management in Dasseh Chiefdom
This project seeks to initiate and popularize the use of ash generated from burnt palm tree wastes, rice pads, cacao and coffee peels for the purpose of black soap production among women especially widows in villages within the Mano Dasse Chiefdom, Moyamba District, in order to reduce their dependence upon the use of trees for local black soap making; thereby improving sustainable forest management practices as well as their livelihood.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Because the project is designed to develop the capacity and improve the livelihood of women in the target village communities, they will be active participants throughout the project planning, design and implementation process. Community participation will be ensured in the following ways: ? Project Advisory Committee (PAC): This group of at least five people in each target village will comprise decision makers in the community including chiefs, community headman and headwoman, and few elderly members of the community. Their participation will ensure providing strategic direction to the Women Groups which will be named as the ?ECO-FAMILY? and the youth groups. Members of this committee will be responsible for resolving possible conflicts over benefits sharing. That apart, the PAC will ensure and manage the commitment of community contributions to the project to include land, labour and more besides. ? The ECO-FAMILY ( ECO-FAM) Members: This group will consist of at least 25 women of the target village community with 85% being widows and able bodied old women. This group will partake in all hands-on training Programmes, and will manage the project after it is handed-over formally to the community. The ECO-FAMILY members will be monitored periodically by HEED to enhance ownership but more critically, to ensure sustainable participatory management. - ECO-FAMILY Back up: Members of this group within the target villages will consist of at least seven youth of about 75% men who will aid the women in building the Mud Ovens and the material deposit Centre.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
For the sustainability of the project even after its term elapses, a robust and organized revenue generation mechanism will be developed. The primary areas for sourcing revenue will include but not limited to the following: ? Income generated from sales of the products ? Continuous investment creation in the community- 50% of the profits in sales of the black soap will be distributed among women groups as dividends. ? User fee for the constructed Mud Ovens by other community members estimated at Le 5,000 ? Micro-lending recovery scheme estimated at an interest of 25% of principal amount etc.
