Design for sustainable communities: renewable energy for Rural Health Clinics (RHCs)
Rural health service is an important national and international priority. However, the availability of electricity to support proper rural health services is less than adequate in Sierra Leone. In recent years the development of reasonably priced and reliable energy systems has made it possible to provide vaccines and other basic health care services in remote areas. A number of international, national, and local institutions, NGOs, and private companies are now deploying renewable energy systems to rural communities in the developing world where health care in rural areas is a national priority.
This project seeks to: improve health services with use of photovoltaic technology; make photovoltaic systems sustainable with community participation; and demonstrate the feasibility of rural electrification at 2 rural health facilities in the Western Area Rural District in Sierra Leone

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
At the end of the project, best practices and lessons learned will be shared and made publicly available through the SGP, GEF and UNDP websites. Final learning and M&E will also be an opportunity to recognize and celebrate successes and develop future initiatives. While these kinds of programmes can never be entirely replicated, because each community has distinctive issues and cultures, the programme is adaptable and may easily be expanded and adapted to address similar issues.
Capacity - Building Component
For this project, LetsACT will design and implement a knowledge management drive based on an innovative, scalable, cost-effective and proven multi-platform communications for behaviour change model, using entertainment education and environmental communication methodologies. This process will equip and empower community-level coalitions to raise awareness of, and motivate an effective response to, the needs for climate change mitigation, community-based adaptation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods etc. The ultimate objective is to create a narrative that changes the way people think and act, and help create a supportive policymaker environment, thereby enhancing environmental management.
