Community Electrification through Solar Energy Systems
The project will transfer solar energy technology systems to supply electricity to educational institutions in remote areas of Sierra Leone. Specifically, it proposes to install solar systems in two secondary schools in Pujehun, the headquarter town of Pujehun district, southern Sierra Leone. The targeted schools are St. Paul?s Secondary School and Holy Rosary Secondary School, each with a student enrollment of about 1,500.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
In addition to a final project implementation report that will be submitted to the National Coordinator of the Small Grants Programme, we will use the last the last month of project implementation to further communicate the immediate outputs of the project through radio programmes using Radio Wanje, the local radio station in Pujehun town, which has coverage over the entire district.
In addition to these, we will invite the print and electronic media to report on the project. This will enable our results to be published in national newspapers and to be reported by local and national radio stations.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project?s direct beneficiaries will be about 3,000 school children representing about 3,000 very low-income rural families who will have access to simple renewable energy systems (the RPS) in their schools, allowing them to have electricity to extend their study time into the night. The two schools enroll students from all 12 chiefdoms in Pujehun district. Their scope of influence is therefore the entire district. School teachers will have access to free online Internet teaching materials, and use computers to organize and present their work better. The solar panels will support 20 energy-saving bulbs, enough to electrify each classroom and additional outlets for charging cellular telephone batteries or for using a low-voltage radio or television, and for charging computers and printers.
