Solar energy as an alternative power source for the Njala university Quality Control Laboratory (NUQCL)
The Njala University Quality Control Laboratory (NUQCL) project will be implemented with a view of strengthening national capacity in quality control for standards conformity of priority products that will enhance their competitiveness in both national and international markets, as well as, strengthening the teaching and research capacity of the University and other higher education institutions.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
The main objective of the knowledge management strategy/plan is to ensure knowledge gained in the implementation of the project is conserved and utilised for the benefit of the NUQCL and the University Community in terms of sustaining the effective utilization of the solar power system as well as the community outreach programme on water quality testing well beyond the life of the project. The tools/methods to achieve this objective are
(i) The participants trained on solar power maintenance will be engaged by the laboratory to conduct joint routine inspection of the facility and recommend maintenance requirements
(ii) The water quality assessment results will be prepared in a user friendly form and deposited with the village authorities who are expected to share and manage this information for the benefit of their communities in terms of ensuring safe drinking water.
Gender Focus
The participation of women in the community outreach programme on bore-hole water quality testing will be ensured by making sure that they understand the purpose of this programme and should be the ultimate beneficiaries of any information generated because they serve the purpose of making available water for drinking and cooking as well as other domestic uses. Also, during the water quality testing programme both male and female students of the Environmental Management and Quality Control (EMQC) will take part in water sampling and analysis as part of an ad-hoc training on water quality testing.
