Community Landscape Conservation: Conversion of Land Degraded by Artisanal and Illicit Diamond Mining into Climate Smart Agricultural Practices and Agro-Ecology Initiatives, Cleaning up of Polluted Streams and Waterways and; Establishing a Community Park and Playground for Children and the Youth
The project will raise awareness on the impact of climate change and its impact on the environments, will reclaim degraded land to create a Green Zone in 2 townships: Ngaiya and Bondorflohun as Community Park and Children?s Playground and promote environment and/or Nature Clubs in schools in 2 townships.
The project ia a pilot programme on Community Landscape Conservation that is designed to convert mined out areas in Ngaiya, Bondoflohun, Singie and Motema townships in Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District into sustainable farmland where climate smart agricultural activities and agro-ecology practices are to be undertaken by smaller holder farmers who are mostly women.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
A short assessment to be undertaken of the impact of artisanal and/illicit mining on the environment will target youths. The reclamation of land which will include draining the open pits and mine heaps, back filling them rocks and back filling the land with laterite and manure for agricultural areas. Youths will be involved in replanting of five hundred trees during the first phase. Youths will be involved during Stakeholders? consultations, town-hall meetings, focus group meetings on climate change, conservation, environmental protection, bio-diversity, climate smart agriculture, agro-ecology, water pollution, soil erosion, mudslides and waste management. Establishment and/revival of ?environment? clubs or ?nature? clubs in schools and/or or neighbourhood clubs in each of four townships. Youths will be involved in Social mobilisation activities in the form of radio programmes: group discussions, one-on-interviews, ?environment hour? for children and farmers, door-to-door campaigns.
Policy Impact
Advocacy for a chiefdom bye-law establishing the ?Green Zone? and the banning of artisanal and illicit mining in the 200 acres of land that will be reclaimed.
