Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management
Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management
The project entitled Bagbwe Agro- forestry and Cashew Project? will be implemented in two sections in Ngalu Bagbwe Chiefdom in Bo District, Sierra Leone. The project being proposed, aims to build the capacity of farmers to address the problems, fuel wood, timber, fodder and other non-timber forest products while halting and reversing the trend of the forest loss and related environmental and Land degradation in the chiefdom promoting vegetable and fruit tree growing and agro-forestry systems on already degraded land both community owned and private the organization will embarked on building the capacity of local farmers in tree planting and Agro- Forestry using cashew nut as the main tree crop and other tree crops like oil palm, citrus, mangoes etc. The organization will also train farmers to establish community and private woodlots for fuel wood supply in for the communities and marketing purposes. This will help these people to improve their potential to increase food security, poverty alleviation, environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods strategy, even though fruit growing and agro-forestry practices are currently a relatively low-key economic activity in Sierra Leone as a whole.
Gender mainstreaming will be at the centre of the project implementation strategy, as women suffer a lot in the face of Environmental degradation and water shortage. Women groups in these communities will be trained in the wood lot management for home consumption and also commercial purposes. They will also be trained in simple waste management i.e. the use kitchen wastes (Bio- degradable) into compost for vegetable production. The involvement of community children at school level is also at the centre of the project for the simple reason that they the future leaders of the community and the country as a whole. So capturing them young is important.

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
As part of the knowledge management, one of the training strategies will be through Farmer Field Schools where farmers will be accommodated from other parts of the chiefdom and beyond. Schools will be involved as well in the planning and implementation of the project, this will serve as one method of managing the knowledge and disseminating and communicating the results which will make the process of replication very easy and effective. Even after funding from GEF-SGP, the people whose knowledge has been improved will stay in the community and help promote the initiative already started.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Successful implementation, both in terms of poverty reduction outcomes as well as the mainstreaming of beneficiary support processes, would provide a strong argument for replication of the project into other areas within the chiefdom including surrounding areas. A replication strategy and action plan would be prepared before end of project and reviewed by all key stakeholders. The plan would identify the main lessons learned from the first year of implementation, assess progress and capacity of community people to carry out project activities, as well as resources required to carry out these activities and potential sources. The result of the project achieved at every stage will be discussed at community level, chiefdom level and also during radio discussion at community radio stations.
