Combating Malnutrition and Land degradation through growing one moringa tree per household
Mthengo Tithandizane was formed and registered with the registrar of cooperative in 2008 under the Zambian cooperative act with a view to uplift the living standards of vulnerable communities through implementation of ecofriendly agri-business. The target population includes women pregnant women breastfeeding mothers and under five children.
The project aims at improving the living standards of vulnerable population in Lusaka west through growing and sustainable production of Moringa tree (Oleifera).
The project will help the community through Moringa tree growing and processing Moringa leaves into leaf powder food supplements for both consumption and sale so as to fight malnutrition & hunger and to increase household income
The cooperative services include; tree planting, participatory adaptive research, soil conservation practices Nutritional and tree planting education.
To effectively implement the aforementioned services, Mthengo cooperative strives to carry out the following activities:
? Planting trees in small quantities to study and research the best practices for mass reproduction and to maximize harvest yield.
? Establishing soil conservation practices to be used in growing the trees for food combined with other low input local crops
? Teaching the target communities, the benefits of planting trees for food and the need for good nutrition in our diets and safe drinking water to maintain healthy lives.
? Conducting Research and adapting the successful harvesting, powdering, and safe-storage of the leaf powder for edible trees
