Co-Management and Climate Smart Livelihoods for Sustainable Management of Gola South
The proposed project seeks to contribute to the conservation of the flora and fauna of the Gola Rainforest National Park through community co-management initiatives that increase locals? active involvement in the protection of the forest while simultaneously using ?climate-smart? agricultural technologies to increase household food security and incomes without increasing communities? contribution to climate change and land degradation. Key among the project?s objectives will be the strengthening of forest management associations, the formulation and implementation of community by-laws relevant to conservation of community forests, the scaling up of sustainable agricultural practices including wetland cultivation and intensive raising of poultry. The project will be implemented in two chiefdoms that cover what is designated as Gola South. They include the Makpele in the Pujehun District and Tunkia in the Kenema District.

The annual report will be widely distributed in the country to partners, CSOs, CBOs and other community groups and members
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Project communities on the edges of the forest are predominantly farming communities with over ninety percent of the resident adult population being employed by agriculture. However, much of the cultivation is done on upland plots. Upland cultivation is rain-fed and has the disadvantage of lower yields and a single cultivation cycle annually. The project seeks to increase farmers? yields by supporting increased wetland cultivation of high yield varieties of rice and vegetables which bring quick income. In addition to this, communities will produce chicken meat by raising poultry on intensive and semi intensive models. The project will also support the effective management of four fish ponds with a projected combined harvest of one ton of fish annually. These activities will not only bring additional income for households, but will also increase consumption of other food stuff such as cassava, millet and yam as a result of greater availability and affordability of animal protein.
