Rehabilitation /Establishment of Smallholder Cacao Agro-forests to address food security and climate change challenges in forest edge communities of the Gola Rainforest
Rehabilitation /Establishment of Smallholder Cacao Agro-forests to address food security and climate change challenges in forest edge communities of the Gola Rainforest
The project will be implemented by two organizations (WoNES and SEDA), who have been collaborating on many projects on environment and land rights protection for poor rural communities in a network known as Action for Large scale Land Acquisition Transparency (ALLAT) since 2014. SEDA focuses on protection of the environment and biodiversity conservation of the Gola rainforest, land rights and livelihoods of smallholders in four chiefdoms of Kpeje, Barri, Makpele and Soro-Gbeima, in the Pujehun district.
The proposed cacao agroforest rehabilitation project will contribute to food security in the face of climate variability and change. It also provides environmental and social benefits as part of farming livelihoods. This tree-based cropping system is an old cultural practice of the target communities that have been abandoned due to policies that institutionally segregate forest from agriculture, despite its enormous potential to diversify and enhance productivity and environmental resilience. As an innovative climate?smart initiative, cacao agroforest has bio-physical attributes and environmental implications that contribute to the protection of the gola rain forest, its ecosystem and biodiversity

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Apart from being direct beneficiaries, the project design depends on youths to provide the bulk of the farm labour for under brushing, pruning and other farm rehabilitation activities. During a project planning meeting with youth representatives in both Barri and Makpkele chiefdoms, they reported that access to information, lack of credit and poor crop yields are the leading reasons why they would like to leave the farming communities for bigger towns and cities. The youths contributed to setting the strategic direction of this project , identified some of the issues and activities, the communities to target and why as well as identifying who, how and why to approach people in the proposed communities. In the implementation phase, youths will form part of the Project Management Committee responsible for the day to day management of project activities at community level. In this way, young people will be attracted to participate in project activities and feel a sense of ownership. Apart from being direct beneficiaries of project activities, young people will be involved in the decision making processes of the project where all project activities and budget will be approved before implementation. The Participatory Impact Monitoring approach will be adopted wherein project beneficiaries and community stakeholders will form part of the monitoring team that will agree on the indicators and the frequency of monitoring. This approach will inspire ownership and skills transfer to participating communities and ensure continuity even after the life of the project
