The Sustainable management of municipality waste through appropriate waste management practices such as reduction, reuse and recycling
The project is a pilot program in the sustainable management of municipality waste through appropriate waste management practices such as reduction, reuse and recycling. The primary objective of the project is environmental Protection that Benefits the Poor. This program strives for maximum waste recovery through composting, recycling, and reuse, and aims at zero waste to be disposed onto dump-yards and landfills. The long term objective is thus to reduce the environmental degradation caused by solid waste. The specific objectives are Empowerment of Women and other Disadvantaged Groups; Raised Awareness and Changing Perceptions; and Remove the social stigmas and taboos surrounding waste. To achieve these objectives, YouthBuild developed a proposal for addressing the waste problem in Makeni City in Bombali District, Sierra Leone. The project will have a two-sidedeffect: it will improve the local environment, and, at the same time, offer continuous employment to individuals from socially and economically disadvantaged groups. The main idea is to encourage women and youth groups to launch sustainable business startups in the business of waste management. Our campaign slogan is ?TRASH IS MONEY?. The program will inform the public about the opportunities that are in waste management. To kick-start this project, YouthBuild has supported two youth groups called eWomen and eYouth to launch two business startups in Waste Collection (door to door) and recycling (making paving stones called eStones out of sand and plastic waste. We are requesting for funding to expand these business startups. The rationale of the program is never again to use the poverty argument to get help. Communities should be made to believe in using innovation to protect their environments and at the same time free themselves from poverty. The CBO was awarded the sum of USD 13,600, for this project. The fund will partly fund purchase of six wheel tipper vehicle, one tricycle, working gears and reasonable quantity of raw materials to be used in recycling. YouthBuild itself has provided about 2 acres of land costing $14,966, one tricycle, 10 street bins and spent $1,360 in beautifying Field Road, Misiri Street and Sylvanus Street in Makeni City. The community is contributing labor for the construction of the production site, collecting plastic waste from public areas and sweeping/beautifying public areas.
