To mitigate the environmental climate challenges of land degradation and sustainable farmland management of 200 vulnerable small holder farmers in Port Loko and Kambia districts of northern Sierra Leone
The project will target a total of 200 beneficiaries, 70% of these beneficiaries are women and youth and 30% will be men. 200 hectares of open farmlands will be planted with economic trees that will contribute to community forest in two chiefdoms in Port Loko and two chiefdoms in Kambia Districts. That is to restore the degraded areas with forest cover thus bringing back the lost vegetation. As a result of the vast deforestation activities carried out by farmers, charcoal producers in serach of their livelihood sources, the proposed action of planting 200 hectares of fast growing economic trees (reforestation) will be in line to the GEF/SGP country program strategy of Land degradation and sustainable forest management. The total budget approved by GEF/SGP country program for the successful implementation of the action is $13,600. This fund will be used partly to establish and to setup a village savings and loans scheme among the beneficiaries of the project and partly fund the agroforestry activities. The trees will be inter-cropped with annual food crops to keep the farms clean and as an immediate livelihood provision for the beneficiaries. The funds will also be used to build the capacity of the beneficiaries in sustainable income generation activities in the targeted areas of the action. Contributions from Tamemsu Women and Youth Development Organization and the targeted communities will be in the form of in-kind support which include local labor and provision of land.
