In the forest area of ??the Batékés plateaux, three (3) forestry concessions were awarded to the companies: Asia Congo Industrie, TAMAN and SICOFOR. This area is transboundary in the Batékés Plateaux National Park of Gabon. The inventories conducted by WCS show vouchers for the presence and abundance of large mammals and the existence of biotopes, as well as important clearings of predilection adjacent to some village terroirs from which elephant poaching expeditions begin to take place. ivory. The purpose of the project is to ensure the continuous monitoring of the biotopes of predilection of large mammals adjacent to or contained in their village soil, with a view to securing them and developing de facto ecotourism products (Gorillas and elephants), the effects of which are ecotourism exploitation, will bring added value to the socio-economic development of the country and the department. To achieve this objective, the project provides immediate support for the development of the aforementioned IGAs to ensure not only the lean season between the cessation of financing by large poaching and the recording of the benefits of ecotourism, but also a significant parallel source in the socio-economic development, which from the soil of Liouesso, will snowball in the department. Thus the project will contribute to the maintenance and / or restoration of migration corridors of large mammals.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Being still in the pilot phase, evaluations will be carried out during the first year of the project and guidance will eventually be taken on a case-by-case basis.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Groups of a dozen people are formed according to the facilities, go camping for a maximum of three (3) days per week to harvest in the beaches of Maranthacée located in the perimeter of forests communaitaire. Each of the groups are small packets of sheets that are delivered to previously organized brokers and holders of the cargo trucks, depending on the volumes ordered. Deliveries are paid in cash and the activity is viable all seasons of the year. Similarly, during the fruiting season of the Irvengia Gabonensis, several groups of a dozen people, will camp for several weeks deep in the community forest, to extract fines from fruits, to constitute bags that will be transported to the village for drying and transformation into food paw bars allowed for local consumption and marketing in urban centers, through previously organized brokers. .

Policy Impact

Standardization of production and marketing methods for non-timber forest products (NTFPs) with a view to obtaining a high added value for the benefit of actors in these value chains. Strengthening evidence in the ongoing process to secure a special binding status for the conservation of clearing blocks and migration corridors of large mammals in national land-use plans

Notable Community Participation

The active population of the area is mainly young, whose main occupation is the poaching of large mammals for ivory and bushmeat trafficking. With the support of the Project, these young people will be enrolled in the association for the social conversion of poachers of the TRIDOM (ARBRAT), to serve as a workforce in activities compatible with the conservation of biodiversity that will be developed through the project.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The nine (9) projects include several simulated themes / activities. By networking them, one could compare the contexts, the results from the good practices and the lessons learned from the central database transformed into knowledge to share and potentially transferable.
