SOLAR FOR FARMERS (Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance Certification Training for Women in Farming
SOLAR FOR FARMERS (Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance Certification Training for Women in Farming
The project will mobilized and train women that are already in small-scale commercialization farming in Pelewahun Geibu, Boama Chiefdom, Bo District, Southern Sierra Leone. The Primary goal of SOLAR FOR FARMERS is to provide local women with the skills and tools to enter the growing solar energy sector as trained and empowered participants.

The importance of solar photovoltaic trainings is very significant in this community because they lack national grid that connect them to electricity for lighting purposes. These women and their family use mostly fire-woods for cooking. Also, this concept is developed to empower rural women solely dependent on farming as the source of income to take care of their family members through capacity development in Solar Photovoltaic installation and maintenance.

Over 90 percent of the women in the proposed project site are the bread winners of their family and their main source of income is farming. This is so, because the men had relied on mining for a very long period and the women on farming. With hard luck on the mining activities these days, the women are generally the sole providers of their families. During mining, a large portion of arable land is distorted which affect the number of hectares that is available for farming. This will also affect the environment and eco-system and biodiversity.

Also, as the growing number of women that have shared their experience with dangers of kerosene including the poisoning of children by ingesting kerosene, dangers of house fire; Chinese light batteries swallowing and disposition for children.

Currently, Sierra Leone has two weather condition ? rain and dry seasons. Most farming activities only last for six (6) calendar months in the year because of the lack of proper irrigation systems and the farmers depend on rains for watering. Therefore, the Solar for Farmers Project is an alternative form of career development and income generation with the following as objectives

? To conduct solar education for 100 women that will serve as trainers for other batch of women.
? To introduce these women to new and renewable technology skills and techniques
? To provide an alternative source of income generation and distribution away from farming.
? To engage women in community development programmes for the Solar Technology development
? To support the objective free education programme in low income communities where most of their teenage girls are already out of school or drop out.
? To protect the eco-systems, biodiversity and the Environment by developing skills in solar trainings for lighting, irrigation and other purposes.

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
A major tool is media engagement. This will quickly propagate the importance and practical knowledge of Solar for farmers? project in communities and around the country. However, another very importance strategy is to work with women in the media Sierra Leone (a female media body) that will help propagate the project. Another tool is working closer with the community youths, elders and different stakeholders. The organisation will ensure a close contact with the United Nations Development Programme- GEF office for regular update and guide on implementation of said project
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
It is believed that the proper implementation of this project will create job opportunities and livelihood for not only the direct beneficiaries but the indirect beneficiaries as well. The participants will serve as agents for all solar photovoltaic systems installation. They will serve as trainers and they will have the ability to conduct routine maintenance on the systems-batteries, inverters, charge controller.
