Climate Smart Sedentary Crop Production for Livelihood Improvement of Women Farmers and Farming Families in Luawa Chiefdom
This project has identified five community landscapes: Baoma, in Luawa chiefdom in Kailahun District with typical ?land hunger? problem to benefit from this interventions. One key relevant factor to the Community Forest Landscapes is ?Land Hunger?. Land hunger, has resulted due to shortage or shortfall in the ?availability? of arable land for agricultural purposes. Therefore, there is a high probability of the existence of land hunger in these five communities where the soil is suitable either for short or long-term agriculture but reserved for community forestry. This reservation has led to a local shortage of agricultural land. These conflicting needs therefore call for more efficient land-use management for an effective and sustainable forestry and agricultural development in the face of increased population and demand for land. The other factors causing land and forest degradation within and around these five communities are artisanal mining and shifting cultivation; coupled with slash and burn agricultural practices, and settlement expansion thereby reducing the capacity of the agrarian ecosystem to provide sustainable services.
This projects aims to substantially increase the sustainable productivity of smallholder women farmers and farming families through Climate Smart Sedentary Crop Production for Livelihood Improvement of Women Farmers and Farming Families in 5 communities in Luawa Chiefdom. The project will sustain crop production; by maintaining the soil fertility of pieces of land at the immediate disposal of the communities, over a long period of time, with increased income. Without this, more of their efforts will be focused on encroaching into the community forest reserved in search of more fertile land for farming.

Project Characteristics and Results
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
All trainings and meetings will be conducted in the local languages to ensure full participation of the community people.
Policy Impact
During engagement with the communities, it was identified that currently the bye laws are dormant on the use and exploitation of forest resources, farm lands and forest resource conservation. However, this project will ensure optimistic that after the project, these communities could have undertaken trainings and demonstrations, they will come up with bye laws to protect their environments.. Some of the best practices could be instituting as law which requires community members to plant five (5) trees for every one tree cut or paying fines within the economic reach of community members. This will strengthen the Policy of creating community forest.
