Mitigating the impact of climate change and pollution of coastal estuaries and promoting ecotourism in the Western Area Peninsula.
The project aims to build the capacity of four coast line communities to be able to reduce the health risks of the population in coastal communities within the western area peninsular. This will be done through establishing an effective system of coastal zone estuaries management in the communities including the rehabilitation of the mangrove and development of a sustainable waste management to reduce the amount of waste that enters the water bodies. In addition, the project will build the capacity of the local communities on entrepreneurship to increase self-employment in the trade on ecosystem products such as fish, oysters etc. The community will benefit from awareness raising programmes on coastal resilience to sea level rise and its impact on habitat and livelihoods of coastal settlements and river estuaries in the Western Area Peninsula.
The project aims at networking and partnering with the local community based organizations /coalition, the local councils to develop coastal management plan and mitigate the effect of sea level rise due to climate change. The project is located at Number 2 Rivers where there are looming climate variability and hazards due to sand mining and large scale fishing which utilizes mangrove for its preservation.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Community Participation will be ensured through community forums and discussions, involving key stakeholders like local authorities and other operational institutions. This approach focuses on community by practice which embraces originality and commitment: activities like the collection of feed stock production and use of stove will be carried out by community beneficiaries especially women,; planning and implementation and the periodic evaluation of the project and feed-backing , are such activities that community members will contribute to the implementation of the project
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Making presentations to selected groups, such as community farmers, partners, land owners or potential funders is considered by project team as very significant. Conference presentation will be the easiest and clearest way that will be adopted to present project information to key stakeholders. Such presentation will use a variety of techniques such as making a short video presenting the results in visual displays, oral presentations, and informal conversations. Data on project performance will be collected and used to produce interim reports, monitoring and evaluation reports. The project team, in consultation with the donor, will share results with the media for replication through TV/radio discussion program, and/or conference.
The project will produce flyers, signposts, and adverts to target people, private enterprises, public sectors such as school; line ministries like Ministry of Energy (MOE), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS). This will build demand by demonstrating success and create opportunity to expand project. The project team will collect, assess and compile information for success stories by interviewing partners, focus group discussions and observation. The team will share the success stories with communities to verify and rank them for the Most Significant Change (MSC) story. The plus minus and river of life tools will be used to guide the sharing of experiences and documentation.
At the close of the project, there will be a reflection and learning event to bring out and document summary of challenges, promising practices, success stories and recommendation for replication and scaling up.
