Strengthening Community Capacities to Mitigate and Respond to Natural Disasters and Local Natural Resource Planning and Management.
This project intends to stimulate and increase environmental awareness, climate change and environmental protection, inspire the culture of conserving and protecting environmental resource, establish a strong link between communities and the environment, provide youth and women with skills to manage waste, enhance crop production, maintains good forest cover and improves their livelihoods in Njagboima Community in Bo City, Koribondo, and Bendu in the Jaiama Bongor Chiefdom.
During phase one, the project will identify and train 300 youths and women (150 females and 150 males) in disaster prone communities in the Bo District to identify early warnings signs and risk factors of natural disaster and generate early response or the appropriate actions, understand local natural resource, and the context of its planning and management. The phase will focus on institutionalizing Community-based Early Warning by obtaining first-hand community level information using structured and systemic collection system, analyzing the information, and communicating the results of the analysis to policy makers/critical stakeholders in a form that would be easily recognized and understood to inform appropriate interventions on issues of natural disaster. Furthermore, this phase will as well focus on investigating the available natural resources in project communities and learn how they can be managed. Community natural resource maps and management plans will be created and share with community stakeholders, government officials and partners. The project will also strengthen and consolidate cooperation between and among government authorities, policy makers, humanitarian organizations, civil society groups and communities exposed to various levels of natural disasters to prepare and respond to emergency situations.
During phase two, the project will involve all trained participants to monitor and report on threats to the proximate conditions of natural disaster at the community level towards facilitating early response to the identified risk factors including issuing alerts for timely response, as well as provide humanitarian expert advice/guide to manage the impacts natural disaster affected communities in the project target district ? Key among the activities in this phase will include engaging in identifying disaster risk factors and issuing alerts, providing feedback on referrals and coping mechanisms when disaster struck, organizing open community dialogue platforms to discuss issues related to disaster prevention, management and humanitarian assistance coordination
