Agricultural Biodiversity Initiative for Ecological Restoration of degraded areas in two communities in the Kpanda-Kemoh Chiefdom-Bonthe District Sierra Leone
The project aims to restore and sustain agricultural production by adopting Agricultural Biodiversity reafforestation initiates. Rural women and youth will play great roles in the implementation of the project. 100 community members will directly benefit from two communities in Kpanda-Kemoh chiefdom, Bonthe District. The project aims to apply multiple strategies at restoring and sustaining agricultural production by adopting Agricultural Biodiversity Re-Forestation Initiatives through ecological restoration, conservation and management of degraded areas of forest edge communities around mining, timber logging and charcoal burning areas that has led to environmental degradation.
The project will provide the needed support in the target communities to help them adapt to changes and seize emerging opportunities to contribute to mitigating the hazards in climate change. In this regards the beneficiaries can adopt new technologies and practices to reverse the negative effects and trends in land degradation caused by mining, timber logging, charcoal burning and over-use of the limited land and water resources. Undertaking tree planting and climate friendly activities such as rearing small ruminants on overused soil can be alternatives for the target communities.
