Empowering Communities & Persons with Disabilities through Skill Training in the Face of Poverty
Empowering Communities & Persons with Disabilities through Skill Training in the Face of Poverty
The project responds to the urgent need to rebuild the social fabrics of Pujehun district and to maintain economic and political participation of Persons with Disability in the District and in Sierra Leone in general. It does this by seeking to address one of the root causes of poverty in the district through the development of improved training and employment opportunities. Persons with disabilities are one of the highest unemployment and poor categories of the population in Sierra Leone, especially rural areas.
This training will endeavor to establish private enterprises either individually or in small groups with the support they will receive from the intervention. Therefore the project will support such individuals or groups through enterprise support so that they have the right skills to establish viable businesses and become gainfully employed. Furthermore, persons with disability face significant barriers in entering the labour force due to a lack of access to financial products and services that are necessary to stimulate business growth and create a culture of savings. For this reason there is a critical need to support disable friendly and inclusive financial services through micro finance programs that will enable them to actively participate in economic development.

The above outcomes will contribute to the fulfillment of Sierra Leone?s government commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs: 4, 5, 8, 10 and 16); Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The project is also reflected to other relevant programmes such as local district and national government programmes, other donors as aligned with the expanding access and improving quality and equity of employment opportunity and job creation as projects including GEF and UNDP projects on reducing poverty and discrimination of persons with disabilities in Sierra Leone.
