Improving the quality and production of prosthesis and orthosis (assistive devices) as a community approach for empowering persons with disabilities especially school going children
This proposal outlines the various innovative community approaches in solving problems of accessibility and social inclusion as a means of empowering persons with disabilities in Constituency 098 in three chiefdoms as follows: Kori, Kowa, and Kamajei, respectively. In addressing accessibility for persons with disability, their full involvement and participation in both planning and execution stages of the project is eminent. For this reason, this project underscores the perception of persons with disability with regards their statuses through focus group discussions, community dialogue, town hall meetings and stakeholders engagements that were held at the camp for persons with disabilities and the community where the undertake their livelihoods on a daily basis. A community Participatory rural appraisal approach was used to determine the various needs and possible solutions were suggested as a way forward for persons with disabilities. These engagements were conducted in Tiama, at the camp and the rest of Constituency 098. A pair wise raking methodology was adopted to rank the needs in descending order of priority. And the most priority was identified as the minimal support towards the movement from place to place to get their livelihood and for their children to get education opportunities as their place of residence lack these opportunities and they therefore have to move out to access them
The budget for this project will cover the following: payment for master trainers in key skills provision for production of assistive devices already stated above, construction of rams and railings on public places to improve accessibility, construction of a water well for the persons with disabilities, provision of prosthesis and orthosis persons with disabilities. Developing entrepreneurs and supporting wealth creation within the community through support to innovation in soap making, bread baking, fabrics and shoe making.
The primary objective for this project is to support the fabrication of assistive devices and capacity development.
