A renewable energy promotion -Achieving a Low-carbon rural society through Solarfi charging kiosk and Micro Enterprise in Gaura Chiefdom-Kenema District, Kpejeh Chiefdom-Pujehun District
This project is designed to be implemented as a pilot to build three (3) Solarfi kiosks in communities in Gaura chiefdom ?Kenema district, Kpejeh chiefdom-Pujehun district and Luawa chiefdom-Kailahun district. This project is also contributing to save the environment of climate change. The project reduces burning diesel 87,600 liters per year. These stations can reduce 202.48249 tons or 27084.845 m3 volume per year drastically.(Formula from www.icbe.com/carbondatabase/volumeconverter.asp). Compared to existing practice 24 HP diesel generator consumed diesel at 12 liters /dayx365 days x 12 charging stations = 87,600liters/ year = CO2 202.48249 tons or 27084.845 m3 volume. If they did not use solar they produce this much CO2 volume per year. (Formula from www.icbe.com/carbondata/volumeconverter.asp). The kiosks can charge mobile phones, provide virtual top-up service to buy mobile airtime and and in-turn provides livelihood support to rural women and youths. Kiosks can charge more than 60 phones at any given time and provides lights closer to public places for pupils to study at night,. The pupils can take lessons, and sensitization campaign can be organized about important matters such as health through hand washing, HIV prevention messages, and climate change mitigation messages to people. In addition, the kiosk will provide education on climate agriculture. The goal of this project is to ensure that three (3) Solar Fi kiosks are very equipped and functional in Gaura chiefdom- Kenema district, Luawa chiefdom ?Kailahun district and Kpejeh chiefdom-Pujehun district in order to ensure low-carbon society. The project will also provide livelihood support to vulnerable groups managing the kiosk in the community. The project intends to benefit more than 300 women and 200 men through capacity building on who provide support and over see the management of the day-to-day affairs of the organization.
The specific objectives are as follows:
? To transfer knowledge to 2,500 people about climate change arising from human activities in order to ensure low emission of carbon dioxide into the environment.
? To build three (3) solarFi kiosks in three sections selected from Gaura chiefdom-Kenema district, Kpejeh chiefdom, Pujehun district and Luawa chiefdom-Kailahun district respectively.
? Train community members to raise income from phone charging and livelihood activities.
? To improve the entrepreneurial skill of 200 community members through support to micro enterprise.
? To create jobs and sources of livelihood for the 15 vulnerable rural poor especially the youths and women in the targeted communities (5-persons per kiosk).
? To ensure that 10,000 community members can apply environmentally friendly best practices on climate change through mass education and outreach activities.
? To increase awareness and public education on the environment in order to reduce carbon the society.
? To create partnership between 200 project beneficiaries and financial services in community in order to improve livelihoods.
? To ensure 600 families (200 x 3 family members) directly benefit from solarFi charging station. The charging fee is currently Le 2,000.00 per charge but after we install the solarfi charging station, the fees will be reduced to Le 500.00 per charge. Thus this will cushion the household income.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
During the baseline assessment, 10 community members actively participated and they have better understanding about the issues to be addressed. They will form the core volunteers during the implementation and would benefit from training and knowledge transfer
Gender Focus
In mainstreaming gender, VOLUNTEERS FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION and communities will focus on the development of more women as beneficiaries. For each group formed, the composition will be 20 women and 15 men. In the selection of FBO and youth clubs,, focus will be placed on girls-15 and boys-5. The beneficiaries will include widows, female headed households, female survivors of EBOLA, HIV/AIDS PERSONS, and VULNERABLE WOMEN. Special preference will be given to women with disabilities. We will raise awareness of male and female gender transformative programme and approaches. Women are seriously affected by poor waste management. The project shall engage the men to lend support to their wives and other female counterparts in the mitigation of climate change and building of solarfi kiosk in the community
