INSTALLATION OF SOLAR PANEL FOR BOREHOLE OPERATION AND SUPPLY OF POWER TO COMMUNITY CAMPSITE

The Tsodilo Village is located 67km from Shakawe, 35km away from Nxamasere village. The village which is consisted of two tribes of Hambukushu and Ju/?hoasi (San) has been an informal (ungazetted) settlement for decades until 2013, when the village was formal given village status. However the Community continues to depend largely on Trust for their basic needs such as safe drinking water and income generating activities such as selling of handicrafts to tourist, tour guides around Tsodilo Hills and gate takings and camping charges. The available government services to the village include mobile health care, education at boarding school in neighboring villages and Ipelegeng program.
The supply of safe drinking water to community remains a sole responsibility of the Trust as government?s plan to provide the village with water is yet to be finalized. There is also a need to connect electricity to community campsite to provide services to the clients. The Trust uses a generator to pump water to an increasing population of Tsodilo community. However the Trust does not have capacity to meet the water demand for the community in particular in light of regular breaking down of the generator and higher prices for fuel. The Trust does not raise enough funds to purchase and install solar panels which are reliable, sustainable and environment friendly.

? Project Rationale (Justification)
The purpose of the project is to install Solar Panel Equipment in Tsodilo in order to supply electricity at the Campsite and to pump water from the borehole to replace the use of power generator. The Tsodilo Trust has been supplying the community with water by use of a generator. This has not been efficient and effective due to the following reasons:
? The cost of fuel for the generator is very high on monthly basis which affects the organization negatively.
? There are high maintenance cost for the generator on monthly basis
? Electricity produced by the generator is not enough to supply community with needed amount of water
? Power will be connected to the campsite as means to enhance services for the clients
? Due to usage of the petrol generators at the borehole the underground water and plants are at the risk of being polluted by the oils which are leaking and drained from the generator. The use of solar power is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

? Capacity needs; some community members have to undergo training on how the solar is working or operated before the project will be handed over to the Board of Trustees and the management of the Trust after its completion. This will also involve carrying out maintenance at all time.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

? Socio- economic alternative livelihoods activities to be carried out are installation of power at the campsites to provide light at the ablutions during night for the tourists. ? Installation of power at the Trust office to be used by computers and other appliances used in the office like printers and photocopy machines which are not being used at the moment due to lack of power. ? By installing the solar it will provide electricity at the craft shop to be able to sell refreshments and to also be used at the reception so that the visa cards and credit cards could be used by tourists to pay because most of them do not travel with cash.

Policy Impact

? The project plan to produce a policy on how the solar power should be operated by the users by providing billboards at the borehole or pamphlets to educate the community about the solar power. ? The solar power should provide enough electricity to pump water from the borehole and also to produce electricity which can be used at the campsites and the office.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

? The project plans to share and capture the information by developing the billboards and pamphlets to educate the public about the use of the solar power, also the project will train some of the community members who will be responsible for the maintenance whenever the need arises for that, it also help to minimize the costs of hiring a person outside Tsodilo.

Gender Focus

? The role of men and women in the project is that in the Board of Trustees they are all presentation of men and women also in the management of the Trust. ? The role of both men and women is almost equal in the use of water for their livelihoods ? Domestic animals e.g. goats, cattle, donkeys and horses and also watering gardens. ? Women use water for watering their gardens and for building traditional huts made of mud(anthills

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

? The village which is consisted of two tribes of Hambukushu and Ju/?hoasi (San) .The activities carried out by the Trust will incorporate these vulnerable groups, everything we do we involve all the groups we do not exclude the people with disability because they are also members of Tsodilo Community Trust.

Notable Community Participation

? The youth involvement in the implementation of this project is very high because the Board of Trustees is mostly the youth and in addition to that the employees of the Trust also the youth are in big numbers, the youth in Tsodilo are the ones who use solar panels for operating the radios and cell phones. ? The youth are part of knowledge based technology. ? At the moment the pump attendant is a youth, their involvement in the project is very crucial. ? The youth shall also be part of the monitoring team

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

? Trainings will be conducted to sensitize community, board of Trustees and the employees of the Trust about the use of solar panels ? The bill boards will be put up at the Reception, campsites and at the borehole ? Leaflets will be developed for the community and public at large on how the lights and how solar operates.
