Compost Manure/Fertilizer Production from food waste to reduce green house gas production (methane gas) in landfills
Compost Manure/Fertilizer Production from food waste to reduce green house gas production (methane gas) in landfills
This project proposal is aimed at addressing the thematic area stated by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF)-Small Grants Programme (SGP) in efforts to address environmental issues such as Climate change and Global warming in Botswana.GEF/SGP programme provides a platform for Community Based Organization (CBOs), Civil Society Organization (CSOs) to address environmental challenges by funding their ideas and implementing them on the ground. Green Habitat Botswana wishes to kick start a project of producing green compost manure/fertilizers from food left over(waste) from Hotels, restaurants, homesteads and any food production company to reduce the rate of waste that is dumped at lands fill which contributes to emission of greenhouse gases(Methane gas). Food waste will be collected three times a week from the places mentioned above to the compost pit, where it will be mixed with organic leaves from plants, saw dust from timber and water to start the composting procedure. The project will be carried out in conjunction with Botswana University Of Agriculture and Natural Resource (BUAN) in Sebele Content Farm, the target community will be the students of BUAN, Farmers, Backyard Gardeners. The innovation behind this will also help in reducing the bad odor from landfills; reduce green house gases that causes climate change and producing compost manure through smart innovative agro solutions.
The objective of the project is aimed at addressing the impact of climate through the use of Climate smart innovative agro-ecology measure, this achievable through raising awareness, workshops and trainings. The specific project objectives are as follows;

? Reduce food waste from landfills and fertilizes barren land for food production

? Reduce the production of greenhouse gases caused by food waste at landfills

? Enhance soil fertility for food production

? Encourage the use of Organic fertilizers

? Facilitate Environmental awareness to the students, farmers and the general public

? To build working relations with the donors of GEF/SGP for future projects and funding.

Expected Outcomes

? Increase organic food production because of compost/organic manure production

? Decrease in food waste at landfills

? Rehabilitation of 50 hectares degraded land using organic manure

? Good health and well being for local community.

? Increased use of organic manure instead inorganic manure by farmers

? A strong with the stakeholders and partners
