Promotion of Inland Valley Swamp (IVS) Cultivation and planting of economic tree crops as an alternative and sustainable agricultural practices in two communities adjacent to Gola Forest Nation Park.

The overall goal of this project is to promote improved Inland Valley Swamp (IVS) Cultivation and planting of economic tree crops as alternative and sustainable agricultural practices among targeted forest edge communities. The current traditional upland slash and burn agricultural practices is a major cause of deforestation and land degradation in communities adjacent the Gola Forest National Park. This project gears towards providing a sustainable alternative to the above practice thereby minimizing deforestation and enhancing the restoration of degraded forest. This project will involve the development of 10 acres of IVS with small scale natural flow irrigational system and the reclaiming of 30 acres of degraded lands due to traditional agricultural practices.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

ADPA-S/L has trained, qualified and experienced staff whose capacities are built to implement the proposed project successfully through the use of result based management strategies and team work. The Knowledge based management strategy will be achieved through the involvement of community people , target beneficiaries (women), Community authorities, law enforcement bodies, women?s, groups, security apparatus, Environmental Conservation Society (ECS), Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) , The Kenema District council in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of project activities. (2) Working with Government (EPA) to develop comprehensive guidelines for Environmental activities taken in to consideration environmental protection and the health and safety of women and youth. (3)Working in collaboration with EPA to enforce/ influence policies that will address environmental degradation, women?s rights, and sustainable livelihoods and invest revenue in to environmental conservation or education. .

Capacity - Building Component

ADPA-SL have a well-furnished office space based in Kenema, the district where the project will be implemented. The organization has a staff strength of 25 with wealth of experiences in managing sustainable livelihood projects. ADPA-SL has a wide range of experts including irrigation/ Agric engineers, Agriculturist who have consistently worked on similar projects. The organization also have strong knowledge and experience working in communities within the Kenema district including forest edge communities. ADPA-SL will use its vehicle, office equipment and furniture to during project implementation to achieve project objective.

Policy Impact

Bylaws will de developed and adopted by the communities to protect the Gola Rainforest.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Data /information collection ? information on environmental degradation and livelihood sourcing patterns in project implementing communities. This can be source through community stakeholders and self -help groups? perception about afforestation, sustainable livelihood and forest management practices in the community, via consultation meetings, perception survey of local communities. Data / information analysis ? all information / data/ success stories collected at all level of project implementation will be analyzed ,challenges and potential resolutions identified. These information can then be made to the target audience[s] (community people, The Donor UNDP/SGP-GEF, EPA, Conservation Society, Law enforcing bodies both local and national, the Ministry of social welfare gender and children?s affairs(MSWGCA), Ministry of agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) , Kenema district council and the general public) through the following means: -There will be quarterly reports written on all project activities and submitted to the donors (UNDP/SGP-GEF) and other target audiences. At the end of the implementation, a comprehensive report will be produced by the project management which will also be submitted to the donors (UNDP/SGP-GEF and other key stakeholders and with approval from the donor agency will be published.

Notable Community Participation

Prior to the development of this proposal, a rapid assessment was done to identified project locations and potential beneficiaries in the two targeted communities. These communities have already consented in providing land space for both IVS development and planting of the tree crops. The community stakeholders are willing support the implementation of this project in their communities. Before implementation starts, community consultation meetings will be held to discuss the full scope of the project. The project will be working with the self-help groups mainly youths who will be the direct beneficiaries. They will be involve in the development of the IVS and the natural flow irrigation system under the supervision of a qualified agricultural extension work. They will also be directly involved in the development cultivation of identified economic tree crop.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The use of locally produced farm tools will be purchased from indigenous people, Besides, ADPA-S/L will involve community stakeholders ( indigenous people ) in the entire project life cycle implementation starting from the initiation period, planning, Implementation, monitoring, evaluation and project closure for active participation and ownership of facilities provided by the project

Gender Focus

This project will be targeting mostly young people including women. Women and young people will be involved project life cycle from the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluations stages through

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

This project will provide an alternative livelihood that will be more sustainable and environmentally friendly than the current traditional slash and burning method of agriculture. A well-developed IVS will enhance not only increase yield, but also double the number of time they will be cultivated thereby boosting the income level of the communities
