Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
- FISHING AND TRADE IN FISHERY PRODUCTS: Throughout history, fisheries have been the very basis of life and culture along the Western Area Peninsular (i.e. project beneficiary location) and other coastal communities (general Freetown). The fisheries sub-sector plays a fundamental role in revenue generation and food security drive in the project area particularly and in Sierra Leone generally. This proposed project will contribute substantially in conserving the marine biodiversity in coastal communities adjacent to Western Area Peninsular Forest reserves. Since this project will contribute in addressing problems like uncontrolled harvesting of threatened marine species, chemical fishing harvesting and ocean pollution that are found to be threat to not only the marine biodiversity of these communities but also the livelihood and income generation activities of these coastal communities that depends on trade of fishery products, it therefore implies that this project will not only conserve the endangered marine biodiversity in the Western Area of Freetown but will also safeguard the livelihood and income generation activities of this communities. The pproject shall support the production and selling of pure water is key income generation activity that is carried in the project location and in many places in Western Area of Freetown
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
- Project Knowledge shall be extended to many stakeholders and beneficiaries through the conduction of policy literacy and analysis of Sierra Leone Forestry Policy of 2014, Sierra Leone Biodiversity Policy of 16, National Protected Area Authority of Policy of 2003, and the Sierra Leone Environmental Protection Policy.. And Project Knowledge management strategy shall also be done through information sharing and awareness raising sessions that will be conducted through workshops/town hall meetings. Reprinting and distribution of hand bills and other materials that foster information, education and communication. ? By the end of the project, the capacity building will enhance 50 beneficiaries to become community based resource persons that can prepare trees nursing sites, nurse, transplant and care for growing trees and or become community based resource persons that have the technical capacities and abilities to train their fellow community members on preparation of trees nursing sites, nursing, transplanting and caring for growing trees.
