The proposed project is to increase sustainable use of natural capital through the reduction of green house gas emission and improve on crop yield by the end of the cropping season 2020/21. This will be done through the implementation of initiative such as maintaining and improving on vegetable production in the mountain rural areas to reduce their dependent on Non-Timber Forest Products from the Western Area Peninsula Forest. The flow of agro-ecosystem and forest ecosystem services to sustain livelihoods of local communities may reduce pressures at community level for competing land uses. Introduction of Climate Smart vegetable production and sustainable land and forest resource management that includes agro forestry, Inland valley swamp cultivation for growing rice, vegetable gardening and the establishment of tree nursery especially economic and other tree plant can support carbon sequestration and increase Sierra Leones Contribution to Carbon credit.

The project will also promoting soil fertility by planting leguminous plants (for nitrogen fixing) and fast growing economic trees to prevent loss of land cover and soil erosion. This will go a long way in addressing poor yield emanating from over cultivation of land which normally results to a greater exposure of land to erosion and loss of soil fertility for productivity.

The project will strengthen the capacity of communities and the farmer-based groups around the mountain areas of the Western Area Peninsula Forest to ensure that stakeholders are able to engage local and central governments in constructive dialogue on environmental planning and policy development that is supported by community bye laws to discourage the continuous felling of trees.
